Minoura Japan – M70-R

M70-R

New entry level magnetic trainer

What's M-series?

M-series is our entry-level tire drive line for providing indoor bike training experience at reasonable price.
The new M-series features newly developed U-shape frame with quick release type hub clamping system for much easier to use.

Position of M70-R

M70-R is the mid-core grade model in the new M-series.
The magnetic resistance unit is equipped with a plain 0.6 kgs steel disc type flywheel for making the cost as reasonable as possible.

Even though the basic model, M70-R generates 440 watt at 40 km/h. This power is slightly lower than upper V-series trainers, but stronger than V100.
Totally 7 levels of magnet power from low to high can be chosen easily via the remote shifter on your handlebar.

New U-shape frame

All new M-series adopt the newly designed U-shape frame.
The main part is made of 38mm diameter steel round tubing to be clean, simple and lightweight.
The leg diameter is slightly smaller than V100 and V130; it's 29mm diameter. But it's durable enough to support your and bike weight stable.

Quick release type hub clamping system

The new U-shape frame features a convenient quick release type hub clamping system for allowing you to engage/release the bike very quickly.
Just pushing down or pulling up the lever then the right side coupling slides to engage/release the acorn nut of the rear hub. You can save the setting up time significantly that helps a lot for taking your bike to outside after indoor workout.

Remote shifter has been changed from old black one to the new red one since December 2009.

Eddy Current System

Quiet and controllable magnetic resistance system

We Minoura is the pioneer of magnetic resistance system on indoor bike trainers.
At that time, there were only two ways to generate resistance; Wind fan and Roller pressure.
Fan type was really loud even though its exponential power curve was very realistic. Roller type was very short life and uncontrollable.
Our patented system was really welcomed to the people in '80s who wanted quiet and smooth resistance system.

The basic mechanism of Eddy Current System is simple.
There are two magnets facing each other, and an alloy disc is located between the magnets.
The magnets pulls or pushes each other depends on the sitting position. N–N or S–S pushes, and S–N pulls. Lines of magnetic force get stronger when the magnets pull each other. At this time, the alloy rotor cuts the lines then generates the resistance power.

One side magnet is fixed on the housing and another magnet can be rotated. By this mechanism, the resistance level can be easily controlled from low to high by changing the angle of the movable magnet.

The current unit has almost same mechanism, but each parts has been tuned up to improve the quality.

Magnetic v.s. Fluid

If you want resistance control, Mag is the best choice

Fluid system was originally developed by CycleOps. Its mechanism is quite simple.
A turbine with fins spins in some liquid (fluid) filled in the chamber. This system generates the resistance when the fan blades run through the fluid.

Fluid system needs to be fully sealed housing in order to avoid fluid leakage, so this mechanism should be quiet. However as a fact, most fluid units are so poor quality that they are much louder than our magnetic unit.
The disadvantages on fluid system are 1) Oil leakage and 2) Less resistance capacity control.

The basic method on fluid system how to adjust the resistance power is just changing the fluid level by moving the chamber's side wall. If the blades sink in the fluid deeper, the resistance will be greater.
However, in the real world, the fluid will not stay in the chamber as a pool once the turbine starts spin. All fluid will have to move to outer edge of the chamber like a ring, and the blades just touch the fluid even if the level is changed.
If they add more oil in the chamber to solve this problem, they will have to face oil leakage problem. As it is easily understandable, any churned liquid will have to intumesce due to the heat. It will increase the inside air pressure then finally the oil will start leaking. So they are not allowed to fill so much oil in the chamber.

As the result, the total range of resistance control on fluid system is much poorer than magnetic system.

Remote Shifter Device

Convenient device to control the resistance level

If you wish to make your workout as effectively as possible, you should have a mechanism to control the resistance level without getting off the bike.
Adjusting resistance may be able to be done by shifting the gears on bike, but it will give different taste from your desired feeling, because you cannot train in your desired gear combination. And too wide gear ratio often makes pedaling jerky due to too much pedaling torque fluctuation.
V-series comes with the newly designed convenient remote shifter device to allow you perfect training experience.

The remote shifter on M80-R had been changed from smaller black plastic one to the red larger type since December 2009.

The previous remote shifter's clamping device was made of metal or plastic, so it doesn't fit any aerodynamic carbon handlebar or stem, including the handlebar with bar-tape. It fits smaller diameter round tube only.
The new shifter's clamp is constructed with flexible textile band so it can fit any dimension.
In addition, it has quick release mechanism for quite easy installation/removal.

The shifter lever size is enlarged for easier operation. The lever ratchet mechanism contains a thrust bearing for smoother and comfortable touch.

Quick Hub Clamping System

For minimizing your bike installation/removal time

We have been adopting a plain thread type hub clamping handle for long time for clamping/releasing the bike to/from the trainer.
The large handle helped the operation so it was not so difficult, but it's true that this style has to take longer time than quick release system. And you had to keep holding the bike with another hand during this operation.

Both V-series and new M-series adopt the long-awaited quick hub clamping system on the right side (rear cog side). Just push down the lever, the coupling slides inward to catch the hub acorn nut in a second. Pull up the lever to release the coupling from the acorn nut,

Coupling distance adjustment is done by changing the left side coupling position.
The left side coupling is made of very durable single-piece solid bolt. A lock ring is built in it to fix the coupling position.

The standard setting will fit the rear hub width between 120mm and 145mm.

On every V-series and new M-series, the coupling is designed to be compatible with the supplied quick release skewer only. You must replace the rear wheel quick release skewer to the supplied one.
When using the bike with plain nut type hub axle, you will not use the supplied skewer and replace the left side coupling bolt to the optional special one.

Cautions

Important Notice

  • Mag resistance unit may become HOT while workout. Do NOT touch it during and at least for 15 minutes after finishing session.
  • The rear wheel spins very fast and will cause serious injury if touch them. Keep children and pets away from trainer while using.
  • The maximum load of M70-R is 120 kgs including bike weight.
  • The couplings fit the supplied quick release skewer only. You cannot use your own skewer on Minoura trainer. You must replace the skewer before use.
  • Hub nut type bike should have fitting problem. The inner diameter on coupling is larger than the standard hub nut so we cannot guarantee the stability. Replace the left side coupling to the optional special one.
  • Any bike with internal transmission type hub cannot be used.
  • M70-R does NOT have the Foot-Step. It's the normal knob bolt style.
  • M70-R is NOT compatible with Watt-Master.

Shifter Operation #1

I cannot set the shifter at "L" position

It may occur that the lever will go back to "1" position automatically even if you twist the remote shifter lever to set at "L" position. This is because the remote cable tension adjustment is not done properly (the cable length is too short).

Firstly, extend the cable as straight as possible.
As the general habit of the cable, if it's coiled, the inner cable will have to be retracted and it will cause the cable shortage. You need to set the cable as straight as possible.

Secondly, check if the cable tension adjustment screw is properly adjusted.
Pull out the black plastic cap from the foot of the cable, then you will see the adjusting screw.
Check the gap between the lock nut and the screw head. If there is any space between them, tighten the nut toward screw head to make the gap to zero.

Thirdly, turn the remote lever strongly beyond "L" position. This will push the outer cable to pull out the inner cable.

It should be up to 20 degrees. Be sure over-tightening the lever may cause serious damage to the inside mechanism.

If you cannot get any good result after trying above 3 issues, contact the shop where you purchase the trainer to replace the remote cable.

Shifter Operation #2

The lever goes back toward "H" while pedaling

You see a bolt in the center of the remote shifter. It works keeping the lever in position. Tighter the bolt, tighter the lever.

On the previous type shifter, the screw is located on the back of the lever.

Our magnetic resistance unit has a habit that the magnet will go back toward "H" position naturally, because the magnets are pulling each other.
At this time, if the center bolt has been loosened, the lever cannot be kept in certain position and will move toward H one or two steps.
To solve this problem, tighten the center bolt a little more by M4 hex wrench.
Be sure too much tightening will cause another problem that it will have to become hard to operate the lever.
