Minoura Japan – E-RDA-1050R-PM

E-RDA-1050R PowerMatic (Discontinued)

Automatically adjusting resistance level

RDA (Rim Drive Action) system now has new additional feature; Automatic resistance level control.
You gain the speed, the resistance level will automatically increased as if the automatic transmission on vehicles does. We call it as "PowerMatic".

Please be sure the remote shifter device on PowerMatic is different from other standard models.
The shifter on other models is for changing the initial resistance level low or high, but this device on PowerMatic works just fixing the maximum limit of resistance like as a torque limiter. Your training always starts from low resistance level wherever the shifter is set.

The large knob underneath the unit called "Governor" adjusts the speed level where the resistance starts being changed.

E-RDA-1050R-PM is the upper end model in our unique rim drive line.

What's Rim Drive System?

Minoura's world exclusive ideal system for both road & MTB

The standard tire drive system trainer must touch the tire surface and it will cause heavy noise and vibration, especially using on MTB with knobby tire.
It's very uncomfortable for both user and neighbors. The only one effective solution to avoid this problem is replacing the rear tire to a slick one.

Rim drive system is completely different from those standard tire drive trainer. It touches the rim side wall where the brake shoes contact, so it doesn't touch the tire at all.
Therefore, any type of tire can be used on RDA comfortably. In and extreme case, a wheel WITHOUT tire can be used on RDA.
This is only available from Minoura.

As well as no vibration and no noise, RDA will not wear the tire at all. So you are completely free from worrying about the wearing down of the expensive racing tire even for warming up before race.

Mechanism of RDA

Nipping the rim with a pair of rubber rollers

The basic mechanism of RDA is nipping the rear wheel rim with rubber rollers from both right and left side. The resistance unit drives the left side, and the right side roller just supports the rim.
Each rubber roller is pushed toward the rim with spring, so even if you pedal strong and the wheel position has moved, both rollers chase the rim automatically.

It is necessary to worry about the damage to the rim. The rollers are not pushed so hard that deforms the rim.
And the material of the rubber roller is almost same to the standard brake shoe, so it is also unnecessary to worry about the rim worn down.

It is the tip to adjust the wheel position a little leftward to avoid slippage between the rubber roller and the rim. Turn the hub handles to adjust the wheel position.

Single Magnet Eddy Current System

Quiet and controllable magnetic resistance system

We Minoura is the pioneer of magnetic resistance system on bike trainers.
At that time, there were only two ways to generate resistance; Wind fan and Roller contact. Fan type was really loud even though its performance was very nice. Roller type had to be worn down very quickly and completely uncontrollable.
Our patented system was really welcomed to the people in '80s who wanted quiet and smooth resistance system.

Our original idea of Eddy Current System is as follows.

There are two magnets facing each other, and an alloy disc is located between the magnets.
The magnets pulls or pushes each other depends on the position. N-N or S-S pushes, and S-N pulls. Line of magnetic force get stronger when the magnets pull each other. At this time, the power the alloy disc cuts the lines becomes the resistance.
One side magnet is fixed on the housing and another magnet can be rotated. By this mechanism, the resistance level can be easily controlled from low to high by changing the angle of the movable magnet.

The unit on E-RDA-1050R-PM is the improved 2nd generation one to change the number of magnet from two to one. Instead of using a pair of magnet, it uses the steel flywheel as one of the magnets.
When the magnet comes closer to the flywheel, the resistance level will be increased.
When the magnet comes away from the flywheel, the resistance level will be decreased.
This is for making the total volume of the unit as compact as possible.

The flywheel weight of E-RDA-1050R-PM is 1.1 kgs. It's precisely machined and heavy enough to provide natural pedal feel.

What's PowerMatic?

An epoch-making system to control the resistance level automatically

The standard magnetic resistance system increases the power just straightly, not progressively to simulate the head wind in actual riding. PowerMatic is the solution to enable it even with magnetic system.

The magnet is usually position fixed on the standard models, but the magnet of PowerMatic is floated on 3 small rollers so it can turn on the base very smoothly.
The Alloy Rotor starts spinning when you pedal, and it will pull the magnet to the same direction, because the Alloy Rotor cuts the magnet lines between the magnet and flywheel as a resistance. The harder you pedal, the stronger the magnet is pulled and becomes closer to the flywheel. It means the resistance level is increasing progressively.
When you slow down or stop pedaling, the magnet will be pulled back to the initial position by the inside spring then the resistance level is decreased.
This is the basic mechanism on PowerMatic.

The remote shifter on PowerMatic works for another purpose than the other models.
Usually, the shifter sets the initial resistance level low or high, then you will start from certain level.
But the shifter on PowerMatic just fix the maximum level. You will always start from very low level wherever you set the shifter. When you reach the set level, the magnet will not move any more that means the resistance level is limited at this point. After that, the unit will generate just normal resistance according to the speed.
The Governor adjusts the starting speed point where the resistance begins to gain.

By these features, you can enjoy various patterns of training like as high-speed/low-resistance training or low-speed/high-resistance training.

ERGO Type Frame

Durable double layered steel frame

E-RDA-1050R-PM adopts durable and stylish Ergo type frame.
The main pillar is designed to have multiple dimensions that is changing from rectangle to hexagon gradually in order to be much more stronger than plain tubing.
The backside plate of the main pillar is an independent part, so the frame has two layers. This is for lightweight, durability and good design.

This frame looks very similar to the one found on VFS150, but E-RDA-PM's frame has a pair of bracket on each main pillar. The bracket has long hole and the Mag unit and the assistant roller are installed on each hole.
By adjusting the roller position up and down, it will fit wide variety of wheel size from 26-inch to 700c. 29-inch is not compatible.

The maximum load of E-RDA-PM is 120 kgs including bike weight.

About Remote Control Shifter

PowerMatic has completely different purpose on the remote shifter

The remote control shifter on PowerMatic works for completely different purpose than any other remote controllable trainers.

On the normal remote controllable trainers, you can change the initial resistance position by setting by the shifter, so you will feel different resistance from the beginning.
However, we use the remote shifter as "Power Limiter" on PowerMatic. It doesn't change the initial resistance point, but setting the Maximum resistance level. Therefore, if you adjust the shifter, the PowerMatic unit starts generating exactly same resistance whatever level you chose.

PowerMatic always starts from the same resistance level even if you change the shifter.
When the speed reaches the pre-set range by the shifter, the unit will stop progressively power increasing and will shift to the normal straight power increasing which is found on every magnetic system trainer. This is the mechanism on PowerMatic.

"I cannot feel any resistance difference even though I shift the remote shifter." That's the typical question on PowerMatic, but it's not a problem nor defect at all. Please understand well the mechanism difference on PowerMatic in advance.

On the other hand, you can adjust the speed range that starts changing the resistance by the large knob called "Governor" found on the back of the resistance unit.
It's mechanism is that;
1) Rubber roller drives the inner steel flywheel.
2) Flywheel will pull the floating mounted magnet plate.
3) The resistance level will be changed.
The governor adjusts the inner spring tension which is connected to the magnet plate. By increasing the spring tension, the magnet plate won't move so easily and will start moving at certain speed. By loosing the spring tension, the magnet plate will start moving quickly.
The governor has already been precisely adjusted in the factory, but you can also adjust it as you want. Do not change the notch so much, just one notch should be fine to experience the difference. The initial position is marked with an orange triangle decal.
