Minoura Japan – Optional Mag Unit

Optional Mag Unit

For adding extra resistance on rollers

The tire on the roller drum has been compressed much harder than the flat road because the roller drum contacts the tire sharper than ground, so you can get natural resistance from the beginning.
Most people are satisfied with this condition, but those who need more power to build up muscles should install the optional Mag resistance unit.

Mag unit is installed between the mid and rear roller drum, and it is driven by the rear roller via a V-belt.
The resistance level is adjustable by operating the white lever on top of the unit. No remote control version is available because it is dangerous if the cable is caught to the crank arm or wheels during ride.

There is no compatibility on the dimensions between Action Magroller and Advance. Each model requires for its own one.

What's The Difference Between Action & Advance?

Mounting bracket, pulley position & V-belt size

Action Magroller originally has the hex bracket on the rear frame for hooking the mag unit in position. When the unit is not installed. it works as a bumper to avoid direct hitting of the frame.
Advance doesn't have this bracket on frame, so separate metal bracket is required to mount the unit.
Therefore, the optional Mag unit for Advance contains this metal bracket but the one for Action Magroller doesn't.

Also the roller drum end cap thickness is difference between Action and Advance, so we differentiate the pulley position slightly. If you install wrong unit, the V-belt should wear out quickly due to wrong belt line.

In addition, Advance's roller drum diameter is smaller than Action Magroller, so we differentiate the V-belt size on each model. Advance adopts K-16 size, and Action Magroller adopts larger K-18 size.
(For your reference, K-16 is also adopted on our rim drive trainer too.)

Merit on Mag Unit

You can do power training on rollers

The main purpose of training on rollers is getting total riding skill such as proper balance or smooth pedaling. It's basically not good for power training.
But if you install the optional Mag unit on your rollers, you can do it as same as stationary trainers.

The resistance hardness can be chosen from 7 levels by operating the white lever on top of the unit.
Do not operate the lever while you are riding on rollers. You must stop training and get off the bike.

Starting training at too strong resistance should be dangerous for your knee, so we recommend warming-up to start with light level then gradually increase the resistance.

Why No Remote?

It's dangerous if it's caught to bike

Remote shifter is a convenient device to change the resistance level without getting off the bike, but it must require a long cable.
It's very dangerous if you leg, crank arm or wheel has caught the cable during ride. Therefore, we don't prepare any remote type unit for rollers.

Cautions

Important Notices

  • Mag unit must be correctly installed onto the frame until it's locked.
  • Adjust the V-belt tension properly. Too loose tension will burn out the drum end cap or pulley. Too much tension will shorten the belt life.
  • Do the resistance level change after getting off the bike and you confirm the wheel is stopped.
