Minoura Japan – Dualist

Dualist

Dual purpose road training tire

Quiet and super long life

It is always the concern that the tire wears out on any tire drive trainer. We cannot concentrate on training if we must worry about the tire wear.
The noise is also the problem that will disturb your family and neighbors' peaceful life, especially living in apartment house. Every indoor trainee should consider how to reduce the noise level from daily training.
Dualist is a specially tuned bike tire to be designed extremely quiet and provide super long life.

Dual purpose on indoor and outdoor

Indoor training specialized bike tire is available from Continental, but it is for indoor use only and you are not allowed to ride in outside with this tire. It means you must replace the tire or the whole rear wheel whenever you go outside. It's troublesome.
Dualist's compound is specially designed to allow both indoor and outdoor riding. You can bring your bike to outside promptly without replacing the tire.
This is the naming basis of "Dualist".

Special casing design

You often hear squealing noise from the tire drive trainer that the tire slips on the metal roller. Dualist deletes this noise by its 27 tpi casing design.
Also the fully rubber coated tire design reduces the heating up the tire to extend tire life.

Made in Japan

Dualist is manufactured by Panasonic Poly-Technology's Japan factory. It's not a cheap imported tire.

Dual Purpose

Special compound design for both indoor & outdoor

Tire is always compressed to the roller on any tire drive trainer, so you cannot escape from the tire wear. The standard road tire is designed for focusing on grip performance on road with various angles, it's not considered to use just one position for trainer. Once the roller pressure adjustment is set wrong, it could be possible a brand-new tire will wear out just in an hour!
Therefore, the riders who often do indoor training usually prepare an extra wheel set with cheap tire to replace.

A trainer specialized road tire is available from Continental (and Tacx), but they are focusing on how to reduce the tire noise, so you are not allowed to use it in outside. You must replace the tire or whole wheel every time you go outside.

Dualist solves this kind of stupid problem. You can use Dualist on both indoor and outdoor.

How Continental Thinks

Merit and demerit on indoor specialized design

Continental's indoor training special tire"UltraSport HomeTrainer" (including OEM for Tacx) is focusing on how to expand the tire life as their first priority. So their compound contains more oil to have intentionally slippage between tire and roller surface to expand the tire life and to reduce the noise level.
Therefore, it is so dangerous to use this tire on actual road that Continental prohibits using in outside. In fact, the rear tire is locked and slips quite easily when applying brake on the road. It's so scary.

And they are afraid the sudden tire removal from rim, so the bead length of this tire is much shorter than standard tires to stay installed.
It means it is very hard and difficult to install and remove this tire to/from the rim. Most plastic tire levers won't fit for this job and will break easily, and it requires metal reinforced special one.

Solutions on Dualist

Special design on compound, tread thickness & casing

Dualist is aiming to 1) dual purpose on both indoor and outdoor, 2) long tire life, and 3) low tire noise.

The compound on Dualist is specially designed to perform enough grip on road. It is not a problem to use Dualist on road as a normal training tire (not recommendable for race).

Tread thickness is 1.8 mm that is double to the standard tire. So we can expect 6,000 km long tire life even on trainers.

Dualist is designed based on 27 tpi(*) casing. Rubber material 100% fully covers the casing to reduce the temperature for longer life and flexible construction decreases the noise.

(* tpi = Tread Per Inch. Lower number means using fatter code to have wide clearance between codes. Rubber comes into this clearance deeply so we can expect better cushion and low noise.)
Continental adopts 87 tpi casing for lightweight and flexibility but it is unnecessary factor on training tire.

Cautions

Important Notices

  • The tire life differs depends on the air pressure, roller pressure and riding style. We don't guarantee the number of 6,000 km distance.
  • To make tire life longer, you must adjust the roller pressure properly. The best condition is the roller compresses the tire in the depth of 3 – 4 mm. Too much compression will give damage to the tire casing then may cause tire burst. Too low compression (just touching the tire surface) will cause premature tire wear like as an eraser.
  • The brand-new Duralist contains wax inside to protect rubber material from UV and ozone. This wax will come out to the roller surface in the beginning of use. Wax won't disturb your health, but it will cause slippage problem. If you see wax on roller, wipe it off with paint thinner.
  • We strongly recommend to use Dualist on actual road first (10 km or more) to wipe out the wax from rubber, then start using on trainer. At that time, don't forget to clean up the tire surface to prevent grinding the alloy roller by sand dust.
  • When you use Dualist on road, remember the total grip is lower than standard high-grip road tire. Ride carefully, especially in wet condition.

Wax

I found heavy wax on the drive roller just after session

Tire is made of natural material so wax is contained to be protected from UV or Ozone.
Wax comes out from the tire while it's new and you see a kind of white powder on the tire surface. It will move to the roller surface after use in the beginning.

Wax itself is harmless but you should remove it from the roller.
It should be hard to remove by just wiping. You should use paint thinner.

Wax comes out only when the tire is new, so we would recommend to run on road for 10km or so one to peel off the tire.

Don't forget to clean up the tire surface when you mount the bike on trainer. Sand dust will grind the alloy roller.

Crack on tire

I see some cracks on the tire

Once the wax has been gone from the tire, it will be gradually damaged by UV or Ozone then it will have many cracks on the surface, especially on the side wall.
This cracks are not made by too low air pressure.

Bike tire is different from automobile tire. All load is supported by its casing (the fiber skin as the anatomy of the tire).
In an extreme case, the rubber just covers the casing, so it's no problem even if the rubber is damaged unless the casing fiber is not damaged.
Also Dualist is designed to avoid dropping out from the rim so it's safe if the air pressure is maintained properly.

The following picture shows much larger crack, but it's still safe to ride. Don't worry.
