Minoura Japan – NW-200

NW-200 (discontinued)

Precisely casted stainless steel nipple wrench

Nipple wrench is the tool to turn the spoke nipple to adjust the spoke tension.

There are several sizes on spoke. Most popular sizes are 13G (2.3 mm), 14G (2.0 mm) and 15G (1.8 mm). The smaller number, the fatter spoke.
NW-200 is combined 14G and 15G in one-piece body.

Body is made with "Lost-Wax" technology to get precise wrench jaws.
The finger area has anti-slip knurling to fit your fingers gently.

Nipple Size

No exact specification on nipple wrench

14G spoke usually fits 3.4mm wrench and 15G spoke usually fits3.3mm, but each nipple manufacturer has its own size. For example, DT (Switzerland) or Wheel Smith (USA) require narrower 3.2mm wrench, and some manufacturer use same wrench for both 14G and 15G.

So we can say there is no exact specification on nipple wrench. You must use the most tightly fittable wrench to your nipple.

Nipple Material

Stainless, Brass and Alloy

Nipple is a nut so it has thread inside. Therefore, nipple should be made of soft and easy-to-tapping material.
Stainless steel is good to have high durability and anti-rust. Alloy is very lightweight. Brass has both performance.

Nipple dimension is a rounded square. So you must have exactly the same size of wrench, otherwise, the nipple won't be screwed in even though you turn the wrench and the nipple will have to be damaged. Once the nipple has been deformed, you cannot tighten/loosen it any more.

Softer material is easier to be deformed. The toughest material is stainless steel, the second one is brass, and alloy is the softest material.

Cautions

Important Notices

  • NW-200 is only for stainless steel and brass nipples. Not applicable to alloy nipples.
  • Use the special wrench for the special dimension nipple such as Mavic's star shape one.
  • NW-200 is not compatible with the special wheel which has nipples on the hub, not on the rim.
  • Make sure there is no looseness between the wrench and nipple before starting using NW-200. If you feel any looseness, choose the narrower size.
  • Place the nipple in the deepest position on the jaw. The outer edge part may not have correct size.
  • Use the wrench for the purpose of tightening the nipples only. Loosening nipple will cause incorrect result.
  • Wheel is one of the most important parts on your safety as well as the brake. If you are not confident to do proper maintenance job or if you have limited skill only, you should ask to the skilled mechanics for the technique.
  • Wheel truing must be done at your own risk. We won't be responsible to any result your job makes.
